The quilt was stitched by Camille Nixdorf Phelan (1882-1946), an Oklahoma quilt artist. According to the American Quilter's Society, " It chronicles the history of the United States from its founding
until 1937...Phelan
produced two major quilts during her lifetime. The first is a quilt
detailing the history of the State of Oklahoma, which resides in the
Oklahoma City Museum of Art. The second, and the quilt up for auction at
Cowan’s, is the American History Quilt. It combines the knowledge of
the historian with the genius of the artist, and portrays the history of
the country vividly by artistic embroidery."
