First Ladies Fashion

Michelle Obama's unveiled painting has brought out renewed interest in what she  (and other First Ladies) wear on official occasions.

Often, like Pat Nixon's 1969 gown, they reflect the trends and favorite colors of the period.

Recognize that 'harvest gold' shade?
Or its excesses.

Nancy Reagan's second inauguration gown cost $46,000.  (It was heavily hand-beaded. )

I hope she wore it more than once.

Here's a long and detailed look at various First Ladies' gowns. It's fascinating to see how they change, not only with the period, but the personality and message of the wearer. The ladies below may all be wearing white ballgowns...but they're incredibly different from each other. (Notice how  accessories change, too.)

Harper's Bazaar also took a history-laden look at the First Ladies, gown-wise.
(The ladies donate their gowns to the Smithsonian after the occasion. Kind of them...lucky for us.)

Lady Bird Johnson, in all her charm.
(Her inaugural gown and coat are on the frumpy side, sadly.)

It was stylin' back in 1965, though.

But my favorite First Lady for fashion will always be Jacqueline Kennedy.
Simple, well-cut, only the best quality materials...
Impeccably elegant.
