Spent the Fourth with our friends, playing Ticket to Ride and watching fireworks...after the all-church picnic and a lovely long nap. Relaxing. This time, though, we left the dogs home -- Charley, in particular, HATES fireworks. He desperately tries to "guard" us from all the racket.
We've been having a terrible time with Ye Olde Internet. It seems to have a lot to do with our frequently overcast skies, about the time I plan on going online to work. Then -- nothing.
The Brick is frustrated, too. Somehow we need to figure out the solution to this. At least internet access seems to work late at night. Most of the time. Sort of.
It is hard to gripe too much, since we've been getting more than our share of rain, too. We spent a lot of time sprucing up the place in between showers, including painting, mowing the lawn, etc. for our landlord friends. Now we can concentrate more on our work this week.
Hot days, but thankfully cooler nights.
A HUGE UFO...but is it? My money would be on some sort of military plane.
The bridegroom dies at the altar. A very sad story...
Behind the scenes stories of Blazing Saddles -- one of the funniest, rudest movies out there.
Homemade sourdough bread. Looks delicious. (From Mountaintop Spice)
Red & Honey's daily detox drink. (Hang in there -- she gets to the ingredients eventually.)
Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger: our early companies failed. Also -- Warren's advice: why saying 'No' actually works. (From Guru Focus)
Putting food by -- why you should do it! (Including the fact that food prices have already risen considerably -- thanks, Surviving and Thriving)
A 2017 conversation with James Herriot's son. We just watched the new BBC version of "All Creatures Great and Small:" it was marvelous. Very subtle -- I'd always thought Robert Hardy captured Siegfried Farnon nicely, but this newbie at the job, Samuel West, does him well, too. Nicholas Ralph as Herriot is outstanding.
More Indian children's graves found in Canada.
The girl who caused the Tour de France crash? They found her.
A lost dog returns home -- and rings the doorbell to get in! (Her owners didn't realize she knew how to use the doorbell.)
Picasso and Mondrian paintings recovered, stolen nearly 10 years ago. Turns out the thief dumped them in a dry river bed, after he realized the cops were closing in.
Money Diary: A week in Texas, living on disability. (If you haven't found the 'Money Diaries' posts, here's your chance. Income ranges all over, and so do purchases -- and it's not always what they can afford, in the long run. Fascinating.)
"Big Girl Summer" holds forth.
Several "most addictive" dips -- easy to make, and a wonderful get-acquainted-while-talking appetizer. (From Taste of Home) Also, don't miss:
The youngest mom in the U.K. just gave birth -- at age 11. (She was 10 when she got pregnant.)
"What's the most hurtful thing someone can do unintentionally?" Quora people hold forth.
The 'Black Irish Lord' who reinforced Meghan Markle's claims of racism in the royal family -- well, oops. He's a fraud. The guy is actually an American student. (Sound familiar? Does the media EVER check its sources??)
A fisherman fights off three sharks trying to grab his catch -- while standing in thigh-deep water. Brave...or stupid?
Have a good week.
