Mark Twain -- And Politics

After another fun-filled week, I enjoyed hearing Mark Twain's take on All Things Political. He had a lot to say:

Why waste your money looking up your family tree? Just go into politics and your opponent will do it for you.

Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

Congress:  that great, benevolent society for the helpless.

Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason.

A half-truth is the most cowardly of lies.

If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you're mis-informed.

There is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress.

Fleas can be taught nearly anything that a Congressman can.

Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it.  (I wonder this too, Buddy.)

An honest man in politics shines more there than he would elsewhere.

All Congresses and Parliaments have a kindly feeling for idiots, and a compassion for them, on account of personal experience and heredity.

Conservatism is the blind and fear-filled worship of dead radicals.

If voting made any difference they wouldn't let us do it

Our lives, our liberty, and our property are never in greater danger than when Congress is in session.

And finally:

Some people bring joy wherever they go, and some people bring joy whenever they go.

At least the photo is cheerful! (Thanks, Lori DeVries.)
