Monday Stuff On the Way to Other Stuff: Fall-ing Into the Month

Cooler temps are wonderful. So is the gradually-developing fall landscape around our trailer. It's made our work easier outside...though the Brick caught the flu (and passed it on) inside. I continue to do inventory and work on appraisals; the Brick, meanwhile, finished up some chores, ordered a new set of truck tires, and prepping for the start of hunting season. We're making slow progress.

It may not be light-speed, but at least we're getting things done.

The Tolkien estate pays up -- 7 million pounds to the British taxman.

Ten ways to save money this fall.

A 4.38 carat yellow diamond found at the Arkansas state park...biggest so far this year.

When do you finally FEEL rich?  Maybe after finding a large diamond... from Financial Samurai.

Blueberry/apple pie -- easy and delicious.

or...

Apple pie jam bars. These could be made with all kinds of jam...  (From One Hundred Dollars A Month)

Ten scientific mysteries.  (From Listverse)

Cracker-crusted chicken nuggets -- baked, not friend.

The Vinland Map is a fake -- unless you believe that 1920s ink was used in the 15th century...

Anna Sorokin says she's neither dumb nor greedy. Uh, sure. I believe that.

Artist Jasper Johns copied an African teenager's sketch into his own work, and never bothered to ask permission. (Apparently he figured the kid would be honored to be included.) I am not a huge fan of plagiarists, having been targeted myself on occasion.

All things gingerbread.  A classic from yours truly.

A man who receives a new "face," thanks to his son's 3-D printed version.

Barbara Walters to the Kardashian family: "You have no talent."

Eleven times movies and tv series changed the course of fashion.

The Marine lieutenant colonel who, like other military figures, demanded accountability about the debacle in Afghanistan, is still in the brig. No charges filed.

A thousand students walk out in protest against N-word graffiti that promoted killing black people. Who wrote it? A black student.

Artist Jens Hanning was paid $84,000 by a Danish museum to reproduce two of his mixed-media pieces. (Hanning has used actual banknotes in past work, and the museum assumed he'd do the same this time.)

Instead, Hanning submitted two blank canvases, titled "Take the Money and Run." He was clear that this was a protest against not being paid enough for his work. (And sheer cockiness, I'm guessing.) The museum may not be able to sue, as they're threatening, because they have already put the blank canvases on display in an exhibit. I am not making this up.

Movie extras who completely changed the scenes they were in. Sometimes for the better!

Photo Stealers -- a website that targets photographers who steal others' work...and fake their own.

A lost camera...found by a bear!

24 mysterious photos.  Got any rational explanations for these?

Afghanistan? "A strategic failure," according to General Milley's testimony to Congress.

Twelve miners trapped underground climbed a two-mile long ladder to get out...after the cage elevator malfunctioned.

The new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago isn't going to drive out the current residents out. Or decimate the Jackson Park, a historic spot that exists there now. (Even though planned buildings will.) But Barack Obama is telling you not to worry about these troubling developments -- everything will be Just Fine.

The  Center's broken ground now. And how much was paid for this beautiful -- and valuable -- lakefront property? Ten cents a year for 99 years.

Did Bach really write the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, after all?  (The Brick can really roar on this piece -- he used to play it in our house in Castle Rock, and literally shaaaakkke the windows. )

P.S. The Brick thinks Bach wrote it. So do I, quite frankly -- although he must have gotten the idea in one of his wilder moments. I do not, however, think Bach wrote it as a teenager. It's far too complicated for that.

Was a pterodactyl spotted flying in the sky over Alaska?  This account is hard to dismiss...

"31 Things we learned about Laura Ingalls Wilder." Great photos, though a little disingenuous.

A serial art thief is finally sentenced to time. Over the years, he's done everything from steal a Van Gogh to swipe a Hals. Amazing.

Morgan Chase will finally pay more than 15 million to settle a 'spoofing' lawsuit.  (You'll have to read this one to understand.)

Have a good week.
