Monday Stuff On the Way to Other Stuff: Random Thoughts and Plans

Don't you find it interesting that so many things happened on the same day last week? Saturday included the Coronation, the Kentucky Derby, another mall shooting (sigh)...and more. Oh yes, my folks'  63rd anniversary, as well. (They celebrated in Heaven this time.)

The Brick returned from a men's retreat at our old church, Creekside Bible. I missed him. Ruby missed him. We both missed him.

More of the usual. around here.. only our hard work is finally starting to show results. I have more to do, including a few large appraising jobs. Planting/weeding also beckons.

Meanwhile:

King Charles III was officially crowned this weekend. For the royalists in the crowd:

A floral tribute from the King to his Queen... Language of Flowers fans will appreciate this.

A short but meaningful speech given by Charles' son at the Coronation concert.

Weird little tidbits of Coronation history.

The story of St. Edward's Crown, used in the coronation. (P.S. It's not the original.)

The coronation menu...sounds pretty 'Brit' to us. Another version of the coronation chicken salad is here.  Plus the coronation quiche.

(Meanwhile, our esteemed President couldn't attend because he's "got a lot going on." (He did send Mrs. Biden to the ceremony.)

Mage won the Kentucky Derby! I was with friends watching this fun race -- as one of the fallback horses suddenly started moving forward -- and won! Interestingly, although 8 horses on the field were direct great-great-great grandsons of the amazing Secretariat... Mage wasn't one of them.

A school board settles a lawsuit:

The Washington Elementary School District was sued in March for allegedly impugning on the religious rights of Arizona Christian University for terminating a partnership that had been ongoing for 11 years after multiple board members attacked them for their religious beliefs. On Wednesday evening, the board restored a contract with the university. A settlement agreement also likely will include that the district will be responsible for thousands in legal fees.

"ADF Senior Counsel and Vice President of U.S. Litigation David Cortman of Alliance Defending Freedom said, 'By discriminating against Arizona Christian University and denying it an opportunity to participate in the student-teacher program because of its religious status and beliefs, the school district was in blatant violation of the U.S. Constitution, not to mention state law that protects ACU’s religious freedom. At a time when a critical shortage of qualified, caring teachers exists, the Washington Elementary School District board did the right thing by prioritizing the needs of elementary school children and agreeing to partner once again with ACU’s student-teachers'."

A Taiwanese official -- saying he doesn't think his "kinmen" can be protected from China. We had good friends at Ann Arbor from Taiwan, and lost touch with them years ago. I wonder how they're doing...

'Bizarre' Depression Era foods... that aren't always.

Twenty delicious rice dishes from around the world.

"What are some of the unexpected benefits from living below your means?"  Quora people hold forth.

The DeVanny family think they captured a face, beneath the water above the USS Arizona.

Another race-faker bites the dust... this time, a professor at the University of California-Berkeley. And certainly not the first to try...

A meat advertisement at a high-level rugby game goes bad, after the bull runs amock.

The "transient trespassers" method that worked to remove squatters in Florida-- without going to court. Could it work elsewhere??

The woman who faked cancer to scam "hundreds of thousands of dollars" and was sentenced to 5 years in prison in 2022 -- now has a podcast on her story.

Did Herschel Walker request funds for his company...masking the request to make it sound like donations to his campaign??  If so, hmmm...a spokesman says the money was "refunded." But still...

Ed Sheeran WON his trial for copyright infringement. It's about time common sense starts to matter in this area.

Five hundred or so pounds of pasta dumped in the woods.  How come? Here's why.

The secret to all those missing socks from the washer (or, in our case, the dryer) -- SOLVED.

A fancy Met Gala has an interesting last-minute invite: a cockroach! Too bad it wasn't as well-dressed as the other attendees...

Birds being jerks -- a very funny photo mix from Bored Panda.

He sold an Andy Warhol to his attorney for $100,000 because he needed "fast cash."  When he offered to buy it back for $150,000, said attorney refused. Now this man is saying it was 'stolen.' Was it? (He's bringing a lawsuit for $10 million. He's representing himself.)

Included in the agreement with Cantor, according to the lawsuit, was a clause that would allow Pivar to buy the painting back for $150,000 within 180 days of the original sale. But when Pivar went to pick up the artwork last month, Cantor said it was gone...

“It was, of course, a stupid thing to do,” Pivar said of the deal.

"Shopping with Andy Warhol." An essay by the man mentioned in the previous item. Stuart Pivar styled himself as Warhol's personal curator, including their collecting forays.

"Not fun facts" that are fascinating.

Forty mysterious disappearances.  Actually, 204. A number of 'regulars' (Virginia Dare, Jimmy Hoffa, etc etc) are included, but many everyday disappearances, as well.

Unsolved mysteries from ancient history.

Singer Gordon Lightfoot died; he was 84. I love his faraway voice, especially in this song:
